Australia's Best Cycling Terrain! Not to mention the brilliant accommodation & town
I have just returned from our training camp in Bright. For those that don't know, Bright is in the Victorian alps and is quite probably the best cycling town in Australia. It is of course the gateway to the most picturesque and challenging cycling terrain in the country. I have been fortunate enough to ride my bike in the famed mountain ranges of Europe and cycling around the Victorian high country is about as close as you can get to experiencing the challenge and thrill of high mountain cycling, without leaving Australia.
The town itself buzzes with cycling energy, bike riders are everywhere and for the most part, people in the town seem at peace with cyclists, which made a nice change from the war currently being waged between cyclists and motorists in Brisbane. We stayed at Pioneer Garden Cottages which just may be the best cycle-friendly accommodation I have ever stayed at. Our host Gordon knows just about everyone and pretty much everything "cycling" in the region. He bent over backwards to ensure that we had everything we needed and I couldn't recommend the venue highly enough. There is a fully equipped bike shed, complete with espresso machine and Wahoo Kikr, a running mountain stream which was perfect for that recovery dip and the world's most relaxing BBQ area.....we will be back.
The camp itself was just wonderful. Some were riding these roads for the very first time and there is nothing like sharing the euphoria, achievement and sheer joy of a cyclist experiencing the high mountains for the first time, takes me straight back to my "virgin ride" in the high peaks. It's a strange concoction of excitement, pain, joy, anguish and tears that represent a crazy mix of emotions, whatever it is......it IS unforgettable and I just love being there to share those moments.
So if you have never been to Bright to ride the mountains of Victoria's high country then do yourselves a favour. Book with Gordon at Pioneer Cottages and get ready for a riding experience unmatched in this country.
So thanks to Edwina, Brad, Dale, Shelley, Don, Yoko, Benny and of course Gordo, for a fantastic 5 days in Bright. It's a trip none of us will ever forget, and we WILL be back.
