Come and sample a little taste of Europe. There are not many places in Australia where you can get a taste of what it is like to tackle the high passes of France, Italy and Spain. Riding high mountains is different to riding in the hills, the altitude and the shear length of the climbs sets them apart in terms of both physical challenge and sense of personal achievement, there really is nothing quite like it.
Fortunately we have the Victorian high country and better yet the fabulous town of Bright. I am lucky enough to have spent many weeks riding in the Alps, Pyrenees and Dolomites, staying in town built around cycling. As bold as the comparison may sound, Bright stands tall in comparison, both as a cycling-friendly town but also as a gateway to an unmatched Australian cycling experience.
Brilliant road surfaces, low traffic volumes, super weather (between October and April) and access to the best climbing roads in the country, all cyclists simply must experience the place at least once. Bight provides easy access to BIG climbs, from the tranquility of Mt Buffalo (17km of climbing at 5.4%) to the spectacular vistas of Falls Creek (30km @ 4.1%) and the ultimate challenge of Mt Hotham, Australia's highest sealed rd (30km @ 4.4%), Bright reigns supreme.
So if you dream of scaling the grand passes of the Tour or Giro or perhaps you are heading to Europe for La Marmotte or Maratona, I strongly recommend you spend some time in Bright to build some all-important climbing endurance, you will be very pleased you did.
