A little slice of living like a pro
We have all read about how team Sky (and many others) head down to Mount Teide on Teneriffe for training camps for the purpose of building form for their big season objectives. These camps are usually held in locations that have access to high altitude climbing (and accommodation) and are timed to allow riders to absorb the "work" and come out the other side in peak condition. So what are the main elements of these training camps that seem to produce such amazing results?
It is of course true that altitude plays a major role here, the lower concentrations of O2 in the atmosphere stimulate a number of physiological changes that create advantages for the endurance athletes. However there are other factors at play.
