Brad Sayer My decision to enlist the help of a professional coach to improve my cycling came about after entering the 235km 3 Peaks ride. I realised I wasn't ready for an event of that scale, and also figured that I was reaching an age where my chances to do it properly were running out. So, rather than blunder my own way through a self-devised training program that may or may not have worked, I elected to prepare properly by getting guidance from an experienced coach. My confidence in my ability to ride 3 Peaks was initially pretty low - I had entered the slowest time classification of 11-13 hours. After talking to Brian and getting a lactate test done, it became pretty clear where my deficiencies were, and Brian devised a detailed and comprehensive training program to address the weaknesses. The training was tough and challenging, but I could feel the benefits quite quickly. Brian kept a close eye on my performance and fatigue levels, and was quick to alter the program where necessary. My confidence and fitness increased as I progressed through the program, and I found myself capable of doing epic training rides to some amazing places around SE Queensland. By the time I came to the taper, I was feeling on top of the world; stronger and fitter than I'd ever felt. I started the 3 Peaks ride feeling pretty calm, knowing I had developed the fitness to cope with whatever the day threw at me. The day passed in a blur, and I finished with a time of 9:24 - around 2 hours faster than I originally expected. Without Brian's plan and guidance, I don't think I would've got anywhere near that time!
One of the benefits I get from Brian's programs is in the certainty that I am getting the most value possible out of the time and effort I invest in my training. I've now moved into the race season, and looking more forward to upcoming races than I have in a long time!
Damo, dishing out the hurt at Battle on the Border 2014
Damien Stacy I have been riding for three years competitively, training at full speed until I burst. I competed over in the pro division in the Taupo challenge and got dropped within 1km of the start. I met Bubba and got onto a Bubbas Bikelab program just after competing in the Taupo event. It took a while to understand riding slower makes you faster but after 4 months of doing the program I rode Three Peaks Challenge of 235km and placed 70th (1800 starters) in a total time of 9 hours (8:38 ride time). The average speed I achieved for this event was faster and had more elevation than the Taupo event and 75km longer.
What I have achieved since being on the program now for 18 months: 2014; 7th in Masters B Cunningham Classic. 17th (@43sec) in Battle on the Border. Several 2nd & 3rd places in elite B club races at Murwillumbah cycling club events. And 13th in elite C grade at Grafton Inverell
2015: Promoted to elite A grade for club racing were I have placed 2nd, 7th and 11th in fields containing several NRS riders. Tyalgum Cup; assisted our team member Dan to win and held of the group from chasing him down If anyone is serious about their training and want to get results, Bubba is your guy to assist you with achieving them.
Dale nears the Mt Hotham summit
Dale Thompson Bubba taught me several things when it comes to completing long climbs and big rides like the Alpine Classic. Simply ride the numbers. Set a ride plan including your heart rate or power on each section of each climb and stick to it. Ride tempo on the first 2/3 of any climb and then go to Zone 4 in the final 1/3.This ensures you have plenty left for the final sprint and optimise your performance over the day not the first part of the first climb. My training was going nowhere and the more I did the less I improved. Bubba cut back the KM and gave me specific targets for each ride. This improved my training results and gave me back a lot of time. In a few short months I improved and took 1 hour off my PB for the Alpine Classic. A fantastic result.
Joe (far right) brilliant team ride at Tyalgum Cup
Joe Spiteri Bubba lives and breathes cycling and fitness, his love and passion for the sport comes through when you talk to him about it. Bubba is always happy to answer questions and his feedback and knowledge is top shelf. He has helped me establish a program that works for me. Since starting training with Brian I not only feel better and more comfortable on the bike but enjoy my time on the bike more than ever, my power numbers have also improved in a small period of time and feel like my training is heading in the right direction. I'm excited about the season ahead and learning more about my training, cycling and the history behind it.
Vickie Liese Two years ago I developed an interest for cycling this interest soon turned into a passion soon enough I found myself wanting to get better and started pushing my boundaries. Late 2014 I began setting some goals an knew that I would need some assistance. Early 2015 I was introduced to Bubba and my cycling world was in for a real shake up!!!!! Bubba tested and calculated my results and before I knew it I was in training and on my way to whole new cycling world. 12 weeks on and I have reached goals that I set and achieved results beyond my belief. I am now cycling 100+km rides experiencing the best views and adventures I have ever seen thanks to Bubba's specific programming advice and support. Staying committed and putting in the time and effort has been so rewarding and meeting Bubba and becoming apart of the BikeLab crew has been an absolute honour.
